One good account of the 44th Alabama at Gettysburg was written by Col. William F. Perry, whose article "Devil's Den" appears in the Confederate Veteran, volume 9, no. 4 (1901), pp. 161-162. Many men in the 44th went down at the first exchange of fire when they emerged from the woods opposite the 4th Maine regiment near the Devil's Den.
