Re: Alabama or C.S. Naval Forces?
In Response To: Alabama or C.S. Naval Forces? ()

You asked: "2. Were there any C.S. or Alabama Naval Personel in Selma, possibly attached to the "Naval Foundry" they had there? If so, do you know if any of the Naval Personel fought in the Battle of Selma?"

At the site of the Port Columbus Civil War Naval Museum is shown a coat at http://www.portcolumbus.org/portcolumbus.htm with this caption:
"Uniform Coat of Catesby Jones - One of the premier Civil War artifacts in the nation, the uniform coat worn by the skipper of the CSS Virginia (Merrimac) is featured in the exhibits at Port Columbus."

Catesby Ap R. Jones was the Commandant of Selma's "Naval Gun Foundry and Ordnance Works". So there was at least *one* navy man there. I suspect that there were many more, too. And if they were there when Selma was attacked in 1865, then they most certainly took place in the battle as every man [including citizens] able to hold a gun was ordered to the lines.

[Note: you can see some examples of Catesby Ap R. Jones' correspondence as Commandant at Selma by going to http://library5.library.cornell.edu/moa/moa_browse.html , clicking on the Naval O.R.'s, and boolean searching on the terms "Jones", "Tombigbee", and "Selma".]
