Thanks for all the information provided and clarification regarding Charles Martin, C. W. Martin, and Capt. Breedlove's Co., 34th Alabama Infantry.

Perhaps that "1" was just a stray mark on the microfilm rather than a "1" or an "I".

Interestingly, I don't find either a C. W. Martin or Charles Martin listed with the 45th Alabama Infantry, which may imply any number of things.
