Re: 23rd Alabama Infantry
In Response To: 23rd Alabama Infantry ()

The ADAH in Montgomery has a photograph of Col. Franklin King Beck. Here's a little on Company "E" and its two captains:

George Green Mathews. Temporarily assigned to duty as acting Surgeon on December 6, 1861. Resigned on November 29, 1862; appointed Assistant Surgeon and assigned to duty at Knoxville, Tennessee.

H. M. Graham. Promoted Captain [March 1,] 1863, to rank November 29, 1862. Surrendered at Vicksburg, Mississippi, July 4, 1863, and paroled there on July 8, 1863. Surrendered at Salisbury, North Carolina, May 5, 1865, commanding Company “D” of the consolidated 23rd Alabama Infantry Regiment.

Accepted in Confederate service on August 24, 1861, members went into camp near Camden, Alabama. The company enrolled at Montgomery, Alabama, on September 28, 1861; officers receiving commissions dated October 5, 1861. Survivors surrendered with Company “D” of the consolidated 23rd Alabama Infantry Regiment.

The following are some additional notes about the formation of the regiment:

Organized at Montgomery, Alabama, on November 5, 1861, officers and men enlisting for three years or the war. The companies of Captains Longmire, Norwood, Mathews and Powe had been in camp near Camden, Alabama, since late August as a provisional battalion. Staff appointments were delayed until March 18, 1862, but most had been serving with the regiment since its formation.
