Ken is correct about the Hankins/Hawkins error. There are two men on the roll who are indexed as Hankins. These are Joel and William B. Hankins of Co. H. However, they match entries on the 1860 census of Fayette County. These are for Joel Hawkins, age 23, and Barton (William B.) Hawkins, age 15, both on page 302.

I've also checked the 1907 census register for all veterans who responded as members of the 5th Alabama Cavalry, and found no one named Hankins in the list. It's also important to remember that, due to a reorganization in Roddey's cavalry command, many members of the 5th Alabama Cavalry ended the war in the 10th Alabama Cavalry, and vice-versa. I checked my roll for the 10th Alabama Cavalry and saw no one named Hankins in that list. I don't have a list of veterans who responded to the 1907 census as members of the 10th Alabama Cavalry. It exists at the ADAH in Montgomery, and certainly will include the name of many who enlisted in the 5th Cavalry.

It might help if we knew where William Hankins lived in 1860, and that he had been identified on the census for that year.
