I think I have discovered what the .37 caliber rifle was. (This caliber is mentioned in the several Alabama cavalry ordinance reports discussed in the thread below on mounted infantry) The type one Maynard Carbine (at least 3000 of which were purchased by Southern States before the war.) fired a .37 bullet. This was no “ squirrel rifle” and probably not a personal weapon brought from home.
