The Maynard used an external primer (musket cap) and so the brass cases could be reloaded unlike the rimfire cartridges used in arms such as Henry and Spencer rifles. The CS did manufacture Maynard cartridges though it became ncreasingly difficult to do so because of the scarcity of brass.
