I requested my ancestor's military record (William Birge aka William Burge) from the archives and was surprised to see that the original muster roll indicated that he was in Co I 54th with a footnote that it became Co I 57th (dated July 1863).

Why was this? Was this an error in the enrollment or did they actually change regiments?

Also, I am in the process of compiling regimental losses (of the 57th) and would appreciate anyone's input on the regimental history - or the court martial proceedings while in camp prior to heading for Atlanta.
