I also worked on a brief socio-economic analysis of a company in the 57th Alabama as part of my thesis on Barbour County soldiers. As mentioned elsewhere, the Fort Sumter era volunteers weren't usually men from the plantations, but rather men involved in commerce or a professional occupation in a town like Eufaula or Clayton. Business seems to have disappeared during the secession crisis, and most had little to do. Many were already enrolled in volunteer militia companies, organizations recruited in Southern towns and cities after John Brown's raid on Harper's Ferry. Almost all of these units were based in a community rather than the countryside, so we don't often see farmers and planters on their rolls.

Units recruited later in 1861 and early 1862 took the poorest group of farm workers out of the county. Realizing they could no longer buy grain from the midwest or market cotton profitably, farmers began planting wheat and oats instead of cotton. As a result they no longer needed as much seasonal labor during spring planting and fall harvest. Laborers who seemed to depend on extra work done for men who owned larger farms and plantations suffered as a result. These men filled out the ranks of commands such as the 15th Alabama Regiment.

It continues to amaze me that so many men remained unenrolled even after passage of the conscript act in April 1862. If I recall, the 57th Alabama included a fair number of men who enlisted for a twelve-month term in 1861, received discharges and went home. Clanton seems to have been able to persuade large numbers of them to return to service. At any rate, if it appears useful, I also have a statistical profile from the census for the group of men who enrolled in the 57th Alabama from Barbour County.
