Jim...
Glad you found the OR report...I also found a reference in Chris Calkins' "The Appomattox Campaign, March 29-April 9, 1865":
"After crossing Deep Creek at Brown's Bridge in the morning, General Merritt, with Devin's Division, moved forward to reconnoiter. Running into the enemy near Tabernacle Church, the Federal cavalry continued to press them past Drummond's Mill and then across Beaverpond Creek. Still pushing the Confederate rearguard, they found them eventually covering the main road to Amelia Court House. Stagg's and Fitzhugh's brigades skirmishe with the Southerners, who proved to be portions of Heth's, Pickett's and Johnson's infantry. This lasted until around 10:00 p.m. when Devin's men withdrew, but only after burning the nearby mill. That night Anderson and Fitz Lee remained where they were- near Washington Academy at the junction of Bevil's Bridge and Tabernacle Church Roads."(76-77)
