Alan, a question sort of off the subject. When Col. Russell's 4th and the 7th Alabama cavalry regiments were consolidated after the Nashville campaign (and after they both were defeated near Thorn Hill on 1/4/65 by Palmer's raiders), who commanded? They were ordered consolidated 1/20/65 by Gens. Chalmers and Forrest. I assume there would still be 2 colonels, 2 lt. colonels, 2 majors, &c. attached to the command. As you know, Gen. Buford rode with the consolidated 4th/7th regiment in opposing Gen. Wilson's column from Selma to Girard, taking part in the battle there.
