Re: Commander of 7th Alabama Cavalry

Russell would have been senior of the two colonels, but for some reason he wasn't around. Hodgson surrendered at Gainesville, presumably in command of this unit.

Lt.Col Hambrick of the 4th Alabama had resigned due to wounds in 1864, and was not replaced. Lt.Col. Turner Clanton Jr. of the 7th was captured during the last campaign and included in the list of paroles issued at Macon GA.

Maj. Felix M. Taylor of the 4th had been captured in Feb. 1865 at Huntsville. It's not clear to me if he escaped, but paroles show that he surrendered at Huntsville AL on May 26, 1865. Records of the 4th Ala. Inf. Regt. also show him as paroled at Meridian MS on May 16, 1865, as Captain of Co. "G", 4th (10th) Ala. Inf. Battn., a rank he had held earlier in the war.

Most curious. Due to the Gurley/McCook incident, it appears that captured members of Russell's Regiment wished not to be identified as such.

Maj. Randolph's service record didn't include a parole, but I'd have to guess that all the field officers came form the 7th Alabama Cavalry. The ADAH has a consoldiated roll for one of the companies of Russell's 4th Alabama, but that's all I've ever seen. My notes indicate that this roll included men from companies "A", "B" & "F".
