The court martial was mentioned by Alan in his post:

"His name was also shown on a court martial document for Forrest's Cavalry, Nov. 7, 1864. There are no later records of Howard with this regiment."

I'd have to go back and look at record again to know for sure that I am correct, but I'd suspect that there were few records of any kind for this unit after that date.
