Re: Little Bear Creek battle/skirmish

Perhaps the action to which you refer at Little Bear creek was part of a number of skirmishes between Col. Roddey's Alabama 4th Alabama cavalry regiment and the cavalry attached to Gen. Dodge's division, as the Federals drove into N. Alabama along the line of the Memphis & Charleston railroad to occupy N. Alabama. Roddey earned his reputation in these well-fought engagements. These actions were the prelude to Streight's ill-fated raid through Alabama against Rome, Ga. Briefly, the succession of events were as follows:

4/17/63: Col. Roddey's 4th Alabama cavalry regiment opposed march of Gen. Dodge's the 2nd Division, 16th Corps, Army of the Tennessee. Dodge's command included a brigade of approximately 1,500 cavalry that joined his division of 4,000 infantry. Cavalry skirmishes from Great Bear creek to Dickson, Buzzard Roost, Barton Station, Cherokee Station, and Newsom's

4/18/63: Federal cavalry fell back to Great Bear creek

4/19: Federals attacked at Buzzard Roost again, but fell back later

4/23: reinforced, Federals advanced to near Little Bear creek

4/24: Federals advanced and occupied Tuscumbia. Cavalry skirmish near Leighton Station. Confederates fell back to Rock Cut and were possibly reinforced.

4/25: Federal cavalry withdrew to Tuscumbia

4/26: Col. Streight's raid began from Tuscumbia

4/27: Gen. Dodge advanced to Town Creek

4/28: Dodge advanced to Courtland and Roddey fell back to Decatur. Gen. Forrest arrived with 3 regiments and pursued Streight. Gen. Van Dorn arrived at Florence with a heavy force of cavalry

4/29: Dodge withdrew through Tuscumbia toward Corinth, pursued by Van Dorn
