Re: Little Bear Creek battle/skirmish

Excellent documentation. The combat I mentioned was probably known as "Rock Cut" and not much else. Perhaps I confused it with the skirmish on Little Bear Creek on Oct. 27, 1863, which took place while Sherman's forces advanced along the Memphis & Charleston Railroad. It also seems that a preliminary skirmish, Nov. 28, 1862, took place on Little Bear Creek.

A few minor corrections: the 22nd Alabama Cavalry Battalion was also known as Warren's Battalion, not Williams. Also, this battalion was the organization on which the 5th Alabama Cavalry was based, so both units could not have been present. Finally, I'm not clear on when Farrell's Georgia Battery joined Roddey's command, but it would seem that the Confederates had a battery on the field.

It's worth noting that there were two Alabama commands known as Warren's Battalion. First, the one mentioned above, commanded by Major James M. Warren. This unit officially went out of existence on February 15, 1863. Another, organized by William H. Warren, formed about May 11, 1864.

I should add that at least two companies that later served with Baxter's Battalion had been in service for several months by December 1862, and may have been involved. These two were: Hyneman's “Beauregard Scouts”, which eventually became Co. "H", 12th Mississippi Cavalry Battalion, and Baker's Company, which later became Company “A”, Jeffrey E. Forrest’s Confederate Cavalry Regiment.
