Re: William Booker Preston
In Response To: William Booker Preston ()

Subsequent responses to your query reveals the service of William Booker Preston. Mr. Hicks' response related to the 1860 census enumerates W.B. Preston and Joshua Preston in Monroe County, AL. The census record indicates Burnt Corn as their home but the families that lived about them actually lived on "the ridge" near the Scotland community where Co. H, 17th Alabama (Scotland Guards) was first organized. Joshua Preston was recorded in the home of Stephen Decatur Andress, a veteran of the 17th. Preston's occupation is listed as a "sawyer" or wood cutter. One of the neighbors included Redden McCoy Andress, 1st Lt. Co.H, 17th Alabama. Redden Andress was mortally wounded at Peach Tree Creek and, according to family stories, was buried in the flower bed of a home near Atlanta. William Booker Preston lived in the neighborhood.
The middle name, Booker, is a common name in Monroe County. The Booker family first settled east of Scotland nearer the community of Burnt Corn in the Pine Orchard area. Is there a connection to the Bookers?
