Many who signed an oath of allegiance also signed a promise to remain north of the Ohio River until the end of the war. See the link below for a previous discussion. If he and his family cannot be found near their old home after the war, you might want to concentrate your search in Ohio, Indiana, or Illinois. Several of these men had their entire family move to join them after taking that oath.
