Re: 4th Alabama Captain Porter King

There is, of course, a darker explanantion of what happened between Bernard Bee and Stonewall Jackson.

As the story goes, Jackson's forces were at the top of Henry Hill hunkered down behind a ridge, out of the line of fire, and not engaged. As the 4th Alabama and the rest of the brigade were being ripped apart, Bee requested that Jackson come down to reinforce him, but Jackson declined. Several observers reported that an angry Bee responded, pointing to the top of the hill, "There stands Jackson like a damned stonewall- rally behind the Virginians."

Who knows...I would have to say that Bee probably was in no mood to say nice things about Jackson or anyone else who didn't come to his aid. As far as I know Jackson was not engaged at the time and his forces were on the ground behind the ridge atop Henry Hill. Had his forces come down off the hill to support Bee, they probably would have been chewed up as well. Jackson did earn his "Stonewall" by holding the line after Bee's efforts.

Bee was the real hero of that moment- too bad "Stonewall Bee" doesn't quite have that ring to it.
