State archives are excellent repositories for this kind of original source material. They are prepared to preserve materials and make digital copies so that they can be accessed via web searches. Auburn University archives provide one example among many along these lines.

Other may feel differently, but I prefer to review diaries, letters and other original documents in a quiet, out-of-the-way location.
