Given that there are no surviving muster rolls for his Company I in the Compiled Service Records subsequent to the Septemember/October, 1862 muster, it is not suprising that information on his demise March 1865 is not found.

The last notation of his service is a mention of his being granted leave January 19, 1864.

I checked the Official Records and find no reports of his regiment or brigade at Bentonville.

Appears that only the newspaper article you note records his death.
