His records, though extensive, do not indicate how or when he died. The records are filed under T.J. Beard, and can be a bit confusing, because cards with other initials are mixed in. They include T.J., J.T., A.T., and J.F., as well as one clearly showing Joseph T. U.S. War Department clerks, in sorting through the muster rolls many years after the war, evidently determined that all of these were really only one man, and that may be the case. At any rate, there are 25 cards in his file showing him being wounded and hospitalized once, as well as being captured and exchanged twice. The latest entry shows him being transfered from Camp Morton, Illinois, to City Point, VA on March 4, 1865, shortly before the war ended. Don't know what happened after that.
