Based on what R.D. stated in his post, I checked Texas State Confederate Pensions and found a J. T. Beard in Brazos County, who applied for a Confederate pension. I then checked ancestry.com searching for this man, and found his original pension application filled out in 1909, when he was 65 years old. It states that he was born in Jones County, Georgia, had enlisted in Company B, 15th Alabama Infantry, and was captured at Chattanooga and exchanged as the war ended. Sounds like your man. On the 1880 census of Brazos County he is found with his wife Sallie, his son, Sidney, and his mother - looks like could be Naomi, but the N is written as an M so it is hard to tell exactly.
