Re: James P. Norton, 8th Alabama, a good soldier

My gggrandfather was Thomas E. Irby and a commander of the 8th. He was killed at Williamsburg in May of 1862. He was a graduate of Mount St. Mary's. His first cousin Christopher C. Pegues was the commander of the 5th (died of wounds after Seven Pines) and also attended Mt. St. Mary's. Both of these guys were from Dallas county and were Episcopalians. I do not understand why they and James P. Norton attended a school located near the Pennsyvalnia border. Having said that, Thomas Irby was an eloquent writer (we have 65 letters he wrote home) and that is probably because of the education he received at Mt. St. Mary's. Mt. St. Mary's is a liberal arts college still operating today.
