Re: James P. Norton, 8th Alabama, a good soldier

Alan,
I am working to identify college alumni (graduates and non-graduates) in the Gettysburg campaign and would be pleased to share my findings with you. For instance I have thus far found 30 University of Alabama alumni who participated. Eventually I hope to publish my findings. The keywords "alumni" and "catalogue" helped to identify many of these sources online; it seems most colleges put them out around the turn of the century. Some are very helpful in identifying specific units that their students joined, but many only list their students as being in the CSA army, which necessitates a lot of additional research. Another great resource are the various fraternity compilations, for example: Grand Catalogue of the Psi Kappa Psi Fraternity, February 1, 1910. Another helpful source that identifies the colleges attended by staff officers is: Staff Officers in Gray, A Biographical Register of the Staff Officers in the Army of Northern Virginia. Sources for colleges mentioned in my last note include:
- Historical Catalogue of the Officers and Graduates of the Columbian University
- Alumni Record of Dickinson College, Carlisle, Pennsylvania
- Franklin and Marshall College Catalogue of Officers and Students, 1787-1903
- The Men of Lafayette, 1828-1893
- General Alumni Catalogue of New York University, 1833-1907
- A Cyclopedia of American Medical Biography, vol. 2
- Biographical and Historical Catalogue of Washington and Jefferson College, 1802-1889
