Alan, I know that the 1st Alabama manned some of the heavy batteries at Port Hudson, but they apparently continued to be designated as infantry. There are quite a few actions described in the literature (including Hewitt's book) in which several companies at a time functioned as infantry. Hewitt states that there were six companies of the 1st Alabama Infantry present at Port Hudson at the time of the May 27th Union assault, and I would guess that a large number were acting as infantry, but I don't know the numbers of infantry vs. artillery. Maybe someone else can supply some info on this?
