Re: Confederate casualties at Jenkins' Ferry

Bill,

I would be very interested to see the data you have on Confederate casualties in the battle. You mentioned you have good data on Walker's Texas Division. I've generally relied on the reports in the O.R. and that is the division that is totally left out. Using my own approximations from the O.R. reports (including the report by Dr. William McPheeters) I come up with approximately 100 killed and 430 wounded, not including Walker's Division. Unless Walker's Division suffered an enormous number of casualties far beyond those of Churchill's and Parson's divisions, it seems likely that the figure given by Dr. Stuckslager of 904 killed and wounded would be more accurate than the one given by Lt. John Hayes of 207 killed and 904 wounded. I'm very interested to see the data you have.

Concerning the murder of black soldiers in the hospital, has your research turned up the man who did it and what became of him? Silas Turnbo in his history of the 27th Arkansas Infantry writes a substantial paragraph about this event but doesn't state what ultimately became of him. Gen. Parsons is mentioned as the general who arrested the soldier in the two articles above, which made me think he might have belonged to his infantry division. Turnbo says that he was a cavalryman, so I'm not sure. Lt. Hayes reports that he was hanged, but Dr. Stuckslager doesn't know his fate.

I hope your project on Dr. Henry Dye's surgical case book is going well!

Allan
