Kenneth,
In the Letters of a Confederate Surgeon, Dr. Bragg writes that the 33rd Ark. Reg. (Grinstead's) moved on Feb 1st, 1864 from Camp Bragg to a place near Dooley on orders of General Tappan. Apparently, the location was considered inferior as he notes that General Tappan was looking elsewhere. He adds: "Our camp is in a low flat place - a sort of second bottom on the borders of a ranch from which we get water about the color of cider." Shortly thereafter, they moved to Camp Sumter, near Springhill.
This doesn't help much with Camp Reed, but it does indicate that the area around Dooley was not viewed by some as a very good location.
