It's been my experience that when you talk to the average Joe, with a typically superficial knowledge of the Civil War, and ask him to name some generals, apart from commanders of armies and such, he'll typically reel off names like Forrest, Wheeler, Stuart, Shelby, Mosby, Hampton, etc., etc. All cavalry leaders.

It takes closer study of the Civil War to recognize and appreciate some of truly great generals of American history -- Cleburne, Walker, Granbury, and all the others we admire so much.
