"Colonel Marmaduke was appointed brigadier-general on November 15, 1862. Not long after his departure, the 3rd Confederate (formerly 18th Arkansas) Regiment was field-consolidated with the 5th Confederate Regiment", but not of course until it manages to sow more confusion by occasionally being refered to as the 3rd Arkansas. My first experience with this was in James Lee McDonough's book on Shiloh. It is interesting to point out, the 3rd Confederate was at the forefront of history during the battle of Shiloh. It was to Marmaduke, Johnston made his comment, "We must this day conquer or perish" and it was the 3rd who made the first attack on the Hornets' Nest.
