Re: Tombstones with Ar Connection

Anthony, I've found so many such instances that I cannot consider V.A. tombstones as proof of anything, unless I can independently verify it myself. Sad that a wonderful government program has been misused by lazy genealogical researchers.

I recall a long email "war" with a gentleman who insisted that his ancestor (who was 9 years old when the war started) was a member of the 3rd Arkansas Regiment. His "proof" -- a V.A. marker on his ancestor's grave in Oklahoma. Fortunately, the real 3rd Arkansas soldier (with the same name) had an old, original non-V.A. marker on his grave in Hot Spring County, with his Civil War regiment inscribed on it. Evidently, some "researcher" noted that the Oklahoma guy's name matched a name in the 3rd Arkansas Regiment, jumped to conclusions, and ordered a V.A. marker. When will people realize that more than one man can have the same name in each generation? And that the Confederate army wasn't in the habit of conscripting 9-year-old little boys?
