August 30 is mentioned, so entries "before" that date are also in August, until July, all counting 'backward,' of course.

Could Powell Clayton have been fudging some dates, too? A. M. Bondi of 5th KS Cavalry wrote of 10 July, '64: "Rebs reported in force some ten miles down the river under General Fagan . . . An expedition was ordered out consisting of 400 cavalry, 400 infantry and five howitzers. Started early in the morning. Enemy was found in a strong position at Richland . . . July 11, 1864 Returned by morning." This sounds nearly identical with Clayton's report supposedly dated 14 July (OR 41/1:68-'9). Hans Mattson seems to confirm the 13-14 July time frame of Clayton's expedition (OR 41 /2 :174).
