In Response To: Sherman ()

Frank, there are two miscellaneous records for Thomas Sherman, both are Union POW records. Both records state that he was captured at Gaines Landing, Arkansas, on February 12, 1865, and forwarded to Memphis, Tennessee, via Vicksburg, Mississippi. According to a U.S. provost-marshal's report at Memphis, he was "released" on March 28, 1865. This could mean one of two things; either he was released from captivity upon taking the oath of allegiance; or he was released from the custody of the provost-marshal at Memphis for transfer to a POW camp in the North. One record states that he was a private in the 1st Arkansas Cavalry; the other states that he was a private in the 34th Arkansas Infantry. He is not carried on the rolls of either unit, which indicates that he enlisted or was conscripted at some time after March 1, 1864 (the last known muster rolls of both units is dated as of February 29, 1864). I hope this helps a little.
