I can’t remember the source, but I seem to remember that officers used this pose to imply military competence, and that its source actually came from ancient Rome (statuary). The author further suggested that Napoleon, who received credit for the pose, actually emulated it, as did our Civil War officers. I’ll try to find that source and post it.
