Napoleonic poses by 19th century soldiers were a kind of acknowledgment of his military genius. Like him or not, the western world hadn't seen anyone like him since Julius Caesar.

That 'hand in the coat' posturing by Civil War soldiers of both sides and all ranks were their attempts to be taken seriously by association with his successes. If paintings of Bonaparte had shown him picking his nose, they would have copied that instead.:)
