I could not find your James Franklin.

Organized by companies in July and August, 1862, combined to organize as the 38th Arkansas Infantry Regiment on September 21, 1862. Assigned to Shaver's Brigade, Hindman's Division, January through February of 1863. Reassigned to Tappan's Brigade under MG Sterling Price in April, 1863 where the regiment fought in the defense of Little Rock on September 10, 1863. Retreated with Price into southwestern Arkansas, where the regiment fought throughout the Camden Campaign and at Jenkins' Ferry on April 30, 1864. Remained in service in southwestern Arkansas until surrendered with MG Kirby Smith's army on May 26, 1865. [http://ranger95.com/civil_war/arkansas_csa/infantry/38th_ark_inf_rgt.html]

Officers: Col. Robert G. Shaver. Field Officers: Lt. Col. William C. Adams; Maj. (later Lt. Col.) Milton D. Baber; Maj. R.R. Henry.

This lady is listed on the CW Units cite as knowledgeable of the 38th, hopefully, she's still around.

In Response To: 38th Arkansas Infantry (Carl Parker III)

For anyone who might be interested, I finally obtained a copy of Banasik's "Embattled Arkansas: The Prairie Grove Campaign of 1862."
Regarding the 38th Arkansas Infantry regiment, it was commanded by Lt. Col. William Adams at Prairie Grove. Banasik states that Adams regiment consisted of 5 companies, citing Col. Bob Shaver's report on the battle. So, having reviewed the regimental rosters on-line, it appears from the transcripts that parts of Companies A, C, G, H, and probably K fought in the Battle of Prairie Grove. I say "parts" of these companies, because Banasik further states that Col. Adams had only 152 men in his command at the battle. If you look at the individual company rosters, 152 men would easily comprise just one company (I think I counted 158 names on the Company A roster. So, the attrition rate must have been excessive.
