John,

William Perry Green Johnston served as a first lieutenant in Ballard's Company 30-Day Volunteers, and later as a private in Co. E, 38th Arkansas Infantry.

James Franklin Johnston served in Co. D, 1st Regiment 30-Day Volunteers, and later in Co. H, 15th Missouri Cavalry. His widow, Martha E. Johnston, applied for a Confederate pension from Randolph County in 1907, citing her husband's service in Co. H, Reeves' Arkansas Cavalry (the 15th Missouri Cavalry was commanded by Col. Tim Reves).

Lewis B. Johnston served in Co. D, 1st Regiment 30-Day Volunteers, and later in Co. H, 38th Arkansas Infantry. His widow, Tennessee Johnston, applied for a Confederate pension from Randolph County in 1907.

When researching Confederate soldiers, a helpful tip is to concentrate your search in those companies organized in the soldiers' home county. In the case of the Johnston's you asked about, all of them served in companies organized in Randolph County. This is particularly helpful when researching soldiers with a common surname, like Smith, Johnston, etc. Really helps narrow down the field.

You can find more information on the regiments and companies mentioned above on the Gerdes Arkansas Civil War page. http://www.couchgenweb.com/civilwar/
