Jim, technically those men were volunteers -- the U.S. Conscription Act was not in effect in those "States in rebellion." But, as many oral traditions and written accounts bear out, there are volunteers and there are "volunteers," if you know what I mean. When a man accepts an offer he can't refuse, he's a "volunteer," with heavy emphasis on the quotation marks.
