One of my g-g-grandfathers was home on furlough, not far from Evening Shade, and was shanghaied by a Missouri (Union) outfit which was patrolling through the area. He was "encouraged", shall we say, to join up, which he did. However, shortly thereafter he got sick and was sent to the hospital at Batesville, where he managed to escape and return home. By this time his regiment, the 38th Arkansas, was down around Marshall, Texas, and out of reach, so he hid out until the end of the war. My grandpa used to tell me stories that his grandpa had told him about his adventures.
