Ken, Have you checked the Fort Smith New Era? It was the Unionist newspaper operated there in 1864-1865. I haven't looked for info on that expedition in particular, but I've found that it includes a lot of good information on military activities in and around Fort Smith. Transcriptions are online through several sources. Just do a search and it should pop up for you.
