Alex, I believe that Abe Breslin, an old veteran writing nearly 50 years after the war, simply misconstrued some half-remembered information about his old outfit. Long after he was discharged, Trigg's Battery was redesignated as the 9th Arkansas Field Battery. Somewhere along the line, he undoubtedly heard through the grapevine that his old company had something to do with the 9th Arkansas, and probably made the logical assumption that it had been become part of the 9th Arkansas Infantry. I've read a lot of postwar memoirs written by old Confederate vets, and it's not at all unusual to run across factual errors -- for example, a veteran of the 21st Arkansas listed the battles his outfit had been in, including the engagement at Farmington, Mississippi, but his regiment was not engaged in that action. Names and timelines often were wrong. It's understandable, and being an old vet myself I have trouble remembering the names of old comrades.

It's just too bad that no muster rolls of Trigg's Battery can be found. Except for a few postwar pension applications, and one or two contemporary records, such as a record of admission to a hospital, very few names associated with the battery are known. I wish I could find a complete roster, so that the names of those forgotten soldiers could be memorialized. So far all I've found are the names of 18 men. If I recall correctly, Trigg's Arkansas Battery went into the Battle of Shiloh with about 50 men, give or take, so there are still a lot more soldiers we need to identify.

Best wishes, and good luck with your research. Let me know if I can help in any way.
