Exactly the point I made in my initial post. The majority of Texans lived in the eastern and southeastern part of the State, which, as I said, was about as "Deep South" in its culture, economy, politics and outlook as you could get. Texas was unlike the other southern states only to the extent that it had a vast "wild west" frontier area, a large unconquered Indian population, and a sizeable Hispanic population. And, unlike the other southern states, Texas had to expend an enormous amout of its resources and manpower on patrolling the western frontier, fighting Indians, and securing an international border (with Mexico). In a sense, Texas was fighting a two-front war.

That's why I said that Texas was, and still is, in a league all by itself. There just ain't nothin' like Texas -- as any Texan will tell you!
