I don't know if this still holds true or not, but back in the 1950's Texas was known for having one of the finest educational systems in the country. They were light-years ahead of rural Arkansas schools. We moved to Abilene for two years when I was in the 4th and 5th grades. I had always made straight A's back here, but when we moved to Texas my grades plummeted. I got more whippings those two years than I ever had before. They had us reading "Ivanhoe" in the 4th grade, while back in Arkansas we were just barely out of "Dick and Jane." The kids were already writing cursive, doing long division, etc. It took me two years to catch up with the Texas kids. When we moved back to Arkansas, I was so far ahead of my old classmates that I was pulled out of the 6th grade and sent on up to junior high school.
