Who all was legally exempt? I've read a diary of a teacher in Little Rock who had a run in with Gen. McRae. Somebody arrested him and said he wasn't exempt. The teacher claimed he was. According to the teacher, McRae, who was a proponent of education, told him teachers had no business teaching and stuck him in an Irish company which caused the guy much anquish. He eventually got his exemption.
