The Arkansas in the Civil War Message Board

Sure. The Capitol Guards, along with the other companies of the 6th Arkansas, were organized very early in the war under the authority of the State Military Board, not the Confederate War Department. The Arkansas State Troops had no hard-and-fast rules regarding age. Indeed, a fairly significant number of the State Troops were either well below and far above what later came to be the established age standards for military service. In July 1861, when the Arkansas State Troops were transferred to Confederate service, they were mustered in for one year. By the time the year was up, the Conscription Act had been implemented, and most of the older and younger soldiers were discharged.
