Bryan

The Vaugines were a very prominant family in Jefferson County prior to 1860. Part of the movers and shakers of early Jefferson County History. But I do not know anything about Marcellus Vaugine.

Benjamin Riggs, a young private in Wrights Cavalry, in his post war writtings of his experiences during the war, mentions a company of "Grey Back" that opperated around Pine Bluff made up of "deserters and bushwackers", but gives no details as to who commanded this "Company". Naturally these men were almost "Ghost" to any "official records", as they operated outside of the normal chain of command.

Riggs was a student of the Pine Bluff Military Academy at the start of the war, which had a company of Zouaves cadets made up of the boys of the school. Their teachers was Archibald Patton who became Lt. Col of the 15th Arkansas and their company Captain was a young boy of 14 by the name of John Ed Murray who became the Colonel of the 5th Arkansas and was killed commanding a Brigade, at the age of 18, at Atlanta.
