There seem to be some inconsistencies and errors in the narrative on the webpage you cited. The most significant one is the discrepancy in the age of the John D. Cain who served in the 1st Arkansas Infantry, U.S. Volunteers, and the John D. Cain who resided in Montgomery County. Cain enlisted at the age of 34, far older than the Montgomery County boy. In addition, some of the dates do not match with known facts and sworn statements.

Also, neither the rolls of the 4th Arkansas Cavalry, U.S. Volunteers, nor the Report of the Adjutant-General of Arkansas [1867] mention John D. Cain in any capacity.
