In Response To: Release time for Conf Soldiers ()

The records do not show any information of either of these two men after February 1863.

E M. Winslow enlisted in Company D, Gordon's Regiment, Missouri Cavalry*, August 18, 1862 in Saline County, Missouri by Col. J. O. Shelby for the war, appointed 2nd Corporal August 25, 1862, last shown present on the Jan. & Feb., 1863 muster roll

R. M. Winslow, enlisted August 18, 1862 in Saline County, Missouri, appointed 3rd Sergeant August 25, 1862, present on the Jan. & Feb. 1863 muster roll

* This regiment appears to have variously known on the field as 1st Regiment Missouri Cavalry, Gordon's Regiment Missouri Cavalry, and Shelby's Regiment Missouri Cavalry; but it was designated by the Confederate War Department as the 5th Regiment Missouri Cavalry, appointed 2nd Corporal August 25, 1862

Company D, Record of Events for Aug 18 to Dec. 31, 1862

Company (D) Col. B. F. Gordon's Regiment Mo. Cavalry was enlisted in Saline County, Mo. by George R. Kirtley & sworn into the Confederate service for the War Aug. 18, 1862 by Col. J. A. Shelby. We made almost perilous & fatiguing March of about 250 miles through the Federal lines occupying 9 days & nights having been engaged during the time in a considerable skirmish at Coon Creek near Carthage Mo on 23rd August 1862 in which we sustained no loss. The Company has borne an honorable part in all the marches, Scouts, Skirmishes & Battles that have occurred since that time.

5th Regiment, Missouri Cavalry

5th Cavalry Regiment [also known as the Lafayette County Cavalry] was organized during the late spring of 1862. The unit was assigned to General Shelby's Brigade in the Trans-Mississippi Department. It skirmished in Missouri and Arkansas, served in Marmaduke's Missouri expedition, was part of the operations against Steele's expedition from Little Rock to Camden, then was active in Price's Missouri operations. The regiment reported 15 casualties at Newtonia, 44 with Marmaduke, 14 at Helena, and 6 against Steele. At Marks' Mills only 1 man was wounded, then 15 were killed, 50 wounded, and 41 missing during Price's Expedition. It disbanded in mid-May, 1865. The field officers were Colonels B. Frank Gordon and Joseph O. Shelby, Lieutenant Colonel Y.H. Blackwell, and Majors George P. Gordon and George R. Kirtley. Skirmish at Newtonia Race at Newtonia & Battle at thesame place, all occurring in the month of Sept. 1862.
We commenced our Retreat from Newtonia Oct. 5 through the most inclement weather, but not withstanding our men bore up under all adverse circumstances with good cheer & were ever eager to meet the enemy. We have crossed the Basken [?] Mountains 7 times. Our men frequently for days at a time without bread or salt & Horses without forage. We skirmished with the enemy at Huntsville. Mudtown & Cane Hill Ark. in all of which no casualties occurred in the Company. We were in the masterly retreat from Can Hill Nov. 28th in the Battle at Prarie Grove Dec. 7th 1862. Our men behaving with great gallantry on both occasions not withstanding all the hardships endured exposed to the cold drenching rains the men but half fed & but poorly clad. We have sustained no loss except two, one by death from disease, viz A. M. Walker who died near Van Buren, Ark. A good & gallen soldier and true friend and J. W. Johnson missing at Cane Hill, Ark. My space is not sufficient to give further details.
