The book "Brush Men & Vigilantes" is online on Google Books. I saw Frazier's map on p. 74 and the comments about Speight's rear guard on p.76. The location on the map, between Ft Smith and Charleston, seems likely. The authors cite the same reports in the ORs I have been reading. All that the ORs say is that it occurred 15 miles from Ft Smith. Since Speight was coming from Little Rock or that vicinity, that would be the most likely location.

I wish I could find the originals of the ORs. There are occassionally "transcription errors" for which I'd like to see the original writing. The same may be true for the "Louisiana Railroad" which could be about anything -- e.g. "Little Rock Road"? My primary focus is the Indian Territory and there are cases where the transcriber couldn't recognize an Indian name so they just left it blank.
