James Caudle is listed in the 1860 census living in Little River Township, Sevier County, together with his wife Elizabeth and three children, his occupation is listed as Day Laborer.

As he was aged 42 in 1860 he would have been outside the age range for conscription and his name does not appear on the National Park Service Civil War Soldiers and Sailors System.
