There was an Abner Gaines who was 2nd Lt. of the Company A (Chicot Rangers) of the First Arkansas Mounted Riflemen. He was 27 when he enlisted at Ft. Smith on 15 June 1861. There was also an Abner Gaines who enlisted March 27, 1862 at Jacksonport and was elected Captain of Company G, 23rd Arkansas Infantry upon its reorganization April 26, 1862 only to resign 2 months later. This is most likely the same person as a portion of the 23rd was recruited from Chicot County.
